Breeding Philosophy
for our Simmental and Simbrah Cattle

Basic Belief:

As BEEF producers, we must strive to improve our product. You’ve heard it before. We MUST eliminate the external fat, provide adequate marbling, and provide a tasty, tender, eating experience for our customers. If they don’t keep eating our beef products, we will be looking for something else to do with our grass. You probably don’t have to be reminded that most cattle are run on marginal ground anyway. Alternative sources for income on my ground are not very good. So I want to improve my BEEF product which will win new customers and keep the old ones coming back often. So, how do we do it.

Maximums we use to breed by:

                1.  PERFORMANCE:   There is no question that when calves weigh more we make more money.  But weighing more is not the only answer, these cattle must finish fast with excellent marbling and a minimum of back fat (yes grade and yield).   However, cattle must be selected that are feed efficient while bending the performance curve. They need to eat a little and gain allot.

                  2.  HANDS FREE:   Before they weigh more they have to make it to weaning without my help i.e. cows are required to have as large of calf as possible by herself (don’t want to pull calves). She must care for and feed that calf by herself (don’t want to milk out any big balloon teats).

                   3.  STRUCTURE:   For that old cow to raise that big efficient calf she will have to walk to water and forage i.e. structurally she has to have correct feet and legs.

                   4.  DISPOSITION:  Another critical selection criterion in our program, we don’t tolerate bad attitude cattle.

Stick to the basics and raise good cattle.
